Why is the perception of looking fashionable so important? Even those who can understand the silliness of shifting trends still tend to play along. While the real reasons for the existence of trends can be argued forever, one clear purpose they serve is that they make it possible for companies to keep selling.

Along with perceived obsolescence comes its alternative, perceived value. When a certain label is put next to a piece of clothing or jewelry, the value of the product may increase tenfold. Certain brands have notions of taste and coolness surrounding them, so being associated with these brands is something consumers are willing to pay large amounts of money for.

The only real problem with purchasing replica products lies in the fact that the expensive brands that make them have their brand image used by another, without receiving money in return. Yet the idea that a label in itself can hold value is one of the strange things about Western civilization and not really associated to any kind of reality. The question that needs to be asked is this: Beyond a relatively small social circle of friends, who really cares?

If the quality of products that replicate other brands is good, there’s no reason not to take advantage of a discount in price. Only upon close inspection will it be made clear that there is a different producer of the product. Some, especially those in the clothing industry, would try to put the idea forward that the difference in materials and care in the creation of products is what causes such a variance in price, but a company would need to try to make this a perceived truth in order to protect their monetary interests. The reality is this: Without the label, the real thing and the copy are pretty much the same.
