There’s sufficient room for upgrading certain specifications, making it meet easily the demands of a busy office environment. This unit can also handle a variety of media sizes, types, and weights, and uses 4000N toner for crisp and clear text and images each time.

Upon purchase, an 8-MB RAM comes already installed. But there are a total of 3 DIMM slots available, making it possible to upgrade the memory to a maximum of 100 MB. This allows for addition of fonts, macros, printer languages, etc.

Two media trays make it possible to achieve larger input handling capacity. There’s a 100-sheet tray and another 500-sheet tray. Media kinds supported include paper (bond, glossy, recycled, rough, etc.), transparencies, envelopes, card stocks and labels. Anywhere from 16 lb to 53 lb of media weight is possible to be used. Compatible media measurements include custom (3 in x 5 in to 8.5 in x 14 in), legal, letter and executive.

What makes the 4000n an ideal workgroup laser printer is the fact that it has two enhanced I/O slots for easy hooking up to a network. There’s the 10/100 Base TX Ethernet card and an IEEE 1284 bidirectional parallel port. It also boasts of a 65000-page monthly duty cycle. HP recommends not exceeding this monthly print volume to ensure optimal printer functioning. Otherwise, it may be necessary to replace supplies or consumables more often than usual.

Printing resolution is set at 1200 x 1200 dots per inch, enough to provide clean and sharp text and graphics on documents. Helping to yield professional looking output without slowing down the unit’s performance is the HP FastRes 1200. There’s also the new precision HP toner for clearer print output. Printing grayscale images is no problem with available 220 levels of gray that can produce photo-like results.

The body of this unit measures 16.77 inches x 15.4 inches x 18.5 inches (length x width x height) and it has a 45.66-pound weight. On the top of it is a control panel that boasts of large buttons for ease of operation. What’s more, there’s a 2-liner LCD screen that displays printer functions, options, status and others.

All it takes is a matter of 12 seconds for the first page to be out, because of the Instant-On fuser incorporated into it. Such lets you finish your task ahead while others are still likely on the warm-up phase. Printer languages used are HP PCL 6 and PostScript level 2 emulations. A CD-ROM comes bundled with the package. It includes language drivers and helpful utilities such as Jetadmin, FontSmart, ToolBox, and Disk Image Maker.
