Preventing Identity Theft On The Internet

Taking the right steps immediately after you discover that you have been the victim of an identity theft is extremely important. The following are some of the steps which you should immediately consider making.

1. Place a fraud alert.
If you haven’t yet placed a fraud alert you should do so immediately. Failing to do so will just put you more at risk. By failing to do this, you will provide the thief with more room to use your details. There are two kinds of fraud alert. An extended or initial fraud alert. An extended fraud alert is usually placed after you have been victim of a crime. With this type of fraud alert, transactions will only be allowed on your account after you have been personally identified. The other type of Fraud alert which is available to you is that of the initial fraud alert. In this instance, you can choose to place an alert even before you become a victim of identity theft. For instance if your wallet gets stolen and you strongly suspect that your credit cards are going to be used, you can have an initial fraud alert placed before the thief gets round to using it.

2.Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
Since you obviously do not have your credit cards anymore, you will need to consider opening a new account. Fresh credit cards will also be needed. Take time out to write to the various establishments. Although calls are by far more expedient-and you still will need to call anyway-letters are by far a much better way of keeping track of all your negotiation. Most credit institutions will request for this anyway.

3. File a report with the correct agencies
Stealing a person’s identity is a serious offense. You should not simply let it lie. Once you are done protecting yourself, make sure that you file a report of the incidence with the affected agency. A good idea is to file one with the federal trade commission and another with the local police force.

Finally, you will need to be more careful. In most cases of Identity theft, people lose their information not because they were attacked by a world class thief, but because they simply weren’t careful enough.
