Cloud computing is not just hype or a buzz word for the times. It is reshaping the IT market as we know it, and it’s here to stay. The media love stories about the cloud. “The cloud” and “cloud computing” have become omnipresent in business and technology reports stories. It’s popping up in shopper adverts and quickly moving into the top-level talks of policymakers all around the planet.

Early cloud adopters in both the non-public and public sectors are yesterday’s stories story. They have cleared the path for the rapidly expanding early majority. And to that end, IDC industry researchers expect that worldwide IT spending on cloud services will reach $42 bn. next year – largely because the cloud computing model “offers a much less expensive way for companies to obtain and use IT.” And nowadays, who isn’t cost cutting?

Therefore if cloud computing is a large deal, why does the idea itself still leave many scratching their heads? What’s cloud computing, exactly?Well, the term has been used some ways lately. According to the Business Software Alliance, “The key features of the cloud are the power to scale and provide, as needed, information storage and computing power dynamically in a cost efficient way, without the user having to control the underlying intricacy of the technology. Cloud computing offers amazing potential for efficiency, cost benefits and breakthroughs to government, companies and individuals alike. These benefits will improve government services and voter access ; transform businesses ; provide new breakthroughs to customers ; improve significant services like medicare and government-provided services ; and create energy savings.”

As the new decade unfolds, we expect to see more businesses, purchasers – and even lawmakers – rushing to educate themselves about cloud technology and the implications that it holds for the way in which they work, live and play. And, they will be asking masses of questions. How will it alter the landscape of standard IT offerings? How will it drive down costs? How will it dovetail with normal IT design? Will it cause new policy discussions?

BSA, the voice of the world’s software industry on a range of business and policy affairs, has produced a solid academic video “to help speed this transition, particularly for policy-makers.” The video provides the essentials of cloud computing – including what outlines it and how it is being used, touches on its many benefits ( increased efficiencies, scalability, augmented functionality, cost savings, etc . ), and then outlines key policy concerns for legislators.

If you are already acquainted with the news coverage around cloud computing trends, you could wonder whether cloud computing has the capability to usurp existing server, desktop and mobile technologies altogether. BSA’s video explains why the cloud model will instead “complement more-established IT architecture.” The video describes public, non-public and composite cloud-based implementations and reacts to a wide range of policy questions on privacy and security, technology standards, intellectual property and more .
