Laser Surgery Is One Of The More Modern Developments of Medical Science But It Has A Large Number Of Uses And The Roll Call Of Laser Treatments Continues To Grow
There are countless sorts of surgery available to treat every area of the body, but one of the newer additions to the list is laser surgery. Most people have doubtless heard of it, but not so many may know that there are several different types of laser surgery out there.
There are three main types of laser surgery, and the principal difference between them is that they make use of different sorts of laser, which is probably an obvious thing to say when reviewing the various areas of the human body where they can be utilised. The big advantage of using a laser as opposed to a scalpel is that there is never any actual contact with the body so there is hardly any risk of infection, and the patient is expected to recover more quickly too.
Hard Tissue Laser Surgery is used – as the name might suggest – on things such as bones, and more usually, teeth. Dental applications can include early warning of tooth decay, preparation work for fillings and treatment for temperature sensitive teeth. One of the benefits of using lasers for such dental treatments is that they also kill any bacteria in the tooth which is being treated, potentially also reducing the likelihood of the patient experiencing further problems.
The second type of surgery is Soft Tissue Laser Surgery. This, as the name suggests, is used on softer bits of the body. It is used in Dentistry for doing work on the gums, but has countless other applications as well. Amongst these are treatments for the brain, spine and nervous system, for ears, nose and throat, for the head, neck and face, and for most areas of the torso.
The third type of surgery is possibly the one which people know the most about – Laser eye surgery. There are quite a few different Laser eye treatments which can be used to improve the vision of the patient. Whilst not every eye condition can be treated by Laser eye surgery, new solutions are being looked for in this field and there is every chance that in the future there will be new Laser eye treatments developed, as indeed might well happen for other parts of the body as well.
There are, of course, other kinds of laser treatment available for some body parts, but generally speaking most surgical uses of lasers are included in the three categories described above.
