Focus on the PlayStation Eye

See more in Gaming

Just recently, at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo conference, Sony presented what they are marketing as the Sony Playstation Eye. Sensing deja vu? You are recalling Sony’s EyeToy, a device for the Playstation 2 that utilized the realisation of the real time movements of the player. The Eye builds upon this concept in some fantastic functions, although they are not ultimately unseen ones. That being said, it is increasingly difficult to predict just to what extent this product will really change the gaming community, if it will.

For those that didn’t see the Electronic Entertainment Expo, one of the primary functions of Sony Playstation Eye is its motion sensing. Just how sensing is accomplished is via the following of the glowing orb at the edge of the remote designed for the Eye. Sony’s producers then went on to show a live performance of the Playstation Eye’s skills, utilizing the remote to function with a 3D interface inside the TV screen and revealing just how the technology could be integrated in games like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and even action. Each movement the player creates with the remote is mirrored onscreen with one to one precision.

But see, doesn’t that sound familiar? At the previous E3, Nintendo performed the very same presentation using their Wii Motion Plus peripheral. Again it recognises and mirrors actions at 1:1 accuracy. The single significant difference between the separate peripherals is that the Sony Playstation Eye requires an augmented version of their EyeToy camera to track the remotes, but Nintendo’s Wii Motion Plus connects to an unseen sensor bar without cables. Therefore Sony’s latest move could be not so ahead in light of the year old technology of Nintendo.

Whilst following in the footsteps of existing ideas, the Eye remains an excellent example of hardware that’s certain to please most fans of the PlayStation 3. Although it will not drastically alter the world of gaming altogether, the Sony Playstation Eye provides a push forward for Sony’s credibility, and should maybe assist them recover regarding advancement.
