Long Island is an island located in New York, just east of Manhattan. It has four counties which includes Suffolk and Nassau. When most people think of Long Island, however, they just refer to the first two counties, says a Suffolk County computer repair owner. In fact, the county of Nassau is rated as the third wealthiest county in the state of New York. Because it is an island, there are a lot of waterfront properties that were constructed by Aristocrats with family money a long time ago. It had a population growth from the 1950′s to the 1970′s and was considered the fastest growing county in the US. This high density of population still exists with them wanting to be near all of the things that New York City has so close.

Although a lot of Long Islanders work in nearby Manhattan, there are a lot of employment opportunities on the small island as well. It is known for its research and engineering and has many businesses that do business in those areas there. It also has the largest industrial park on the East Coast with over 1300 companies dealing with industries situated there. The more recent industry of making wine and vineyards has happened over the past 25 years as well as other kinds of farms like pumpkins.

Long Island is known to be a huge melting pot of various cultures and this is shown in the various restaurants that are located there. There are several wonderful pizza places with the prominent Italian influence there in addition to diners and delis that have Greek food and some terrific bagel shops that are run by Jewish families. Some famous Long islanders that have written songs about their hometown are Billy Joel and Paul Simon among several others.
