Artificial Intelligence Software

Artificial Intelligence, also known as AI, is a mixture of engineering and technology with the aim of making machines that are able to process information and then use that information by learning from it. The Artificial Intelligence Foundation is responsible for creating A.L.I.C.E., the Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer. She is an intelligence chat robot, and the software used to make A.L.I.C.E is available at no cost through the Free Software Foundation.

You can chat with A.L.I.C.E. on their website and she can interact with you the way a real person would. She uses Artificial Intelligence Markup Language to form her responses to your questions and comments. A.L.I.C.E was developed in 1995. She is continually updated and challenged as new technology is developed.

While many people are fascinated by A.L.I.C.E, she is the center of much controversy regarding AI. Many believe we are playing with fire in trying to build intelligent robots. They worry about scenarios from movies where the robots take over from the people. Could that happen? It is impossible to predict with any certainty what a machine will do once it is acting in a learning mode. Others worry that similar machines could be created to do damage rather than to do good. Not surprisingly, the military has a huge interest in AI. It would like to send machines into dangerous combat zones rather than real people. The issue has become a hot topic concerning ethics, technology, and politics. The biggest question is if we develop a machine with a brain that functions similar to a human, will that machine be self aware? Should it be considered a living thing? If so, then perhaps AI robots should not be put in the line of danger any more than people should.

Technology has brought AI a long way, and it is already used in many forms to make our lives easier. However, as AI progresses the controversy also grows. When it comes to developing intelligent machines, how far is too far? Time will tell where A.L.I.C.E. and similar projects go. In the meantime, both sides of the issue will continue to pursue their viewpoint regarding artificial intelligence.
